Engagements Where Prisoners Were Captured and Brought to Camp Ford

THE BATTLE OF STIRLING PLANTATION   READ MORE

The first Large contingent of Federal Prisoners was captured at an engagement at Stirling Plantation, Louisiana in September 1863, and included the 19th Iowa Infantry. Please click here for a brief history of the unit and an account of the engagement.

There were many engagements from which Union Prisoners were captured and brought to the camp. The following list is primarily taken from the exchange lists and given alphabetically by engagement. Where there was more than one action at the same location, multiple dates are given. There is no attempt to break out by numbers captured. It is too much of an accounting problem for this page. The large engagements such as Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, etc. are obvious.

It is interesting to note how many single locations are given where a scout or straggler was taken prisoner. There were some discrepancies in dates on the exchange lists.

If errors are noted, please notify us and they will be reviewed.
